Afternoon Darjeeling – 2010 First Flush Darjeeling from the Singbulli Estate

The Singbulli Tea Estate is situated in the Mirik Valley about 40 miles south of the town of Darjeeling. This tea estate is world renowned and consistently produces some of the best darjeelings every season.

Although the first flush darjeelings were delayed again this year (this time due to a drought) we were very excited to finally receive this tea! It is a light and flavorful tea, slightly astringent with a very fine bouquet. This tea is perfect for sipping anytime of day, but particularly enjoyable in the afternoon.

Visit us at Historic Findlay Market to try this fantastic Darjeeling at a great price (only $2.75 per ounce), or read more about Darjeeling: The Champagne of Teas.

India is seeking patent protection for Darjeeling tea, just as Champagne is protected by Geographical Indication (GI). If the EU grants protection of the Darjeeling name, it will make it illegal for any organization to use the Darjeeling name unless the tea has come from the Darjeeling region of India.

Darjeeling teas have long been known as the ‘Champagne of Teas.’ They are some of the most widely sought after teas and many first flush Darjeelings sell out well in advance. These teas are truly unique with distinctive muscatel overtones.

If this law passes, Darjeeling will truly be in the same league as Champagne. Darjeeling lovers around the world will rejoice as the region is recognized for producing some of the finest teas.

For more information on the patent protection of Darjeeling teas, please see this article.

I grew up drinking strong black tea, British style. My mum is a Brit and for many years black tea with milk and two sugars was all I knew. Anytime we went to London to visit family, that was what I was offered and I loved it. To me it was comforting and energizing at the same time and I actually had making my perfect cup of tea down to an art form. However, once I started traveling a little more, I realized there are so many other teas out there and I needed to start trying them. I also had become so particular about the way I liked my tea that no one else could make it quite as good.

So I started trying as many different types of tea as I could, hoping to find another ‘perfect cup of tea.’ At first I was a bit sceptical of green teas because they seemed so weak compared to what I was used to. But the more I tried them, the more I realized how different each tea tastes. Some I didn’t care for as much, but I found plenty that I loved. I also found that I actually like tea much better without the milk and sugar.

When I go a new tea room or travel to a new place I like to try what they recommend. I have been disappointed a few times, but I usually end up really enjoying a cup of tea that I might not have tried otherwise. The best part is being able to share those new teas with friends and family who wouldn’t have tried them either.

Here are a few recommendations for trying new teas or if you want to buy a new tea as a gift. Feel free to add your own to the list…

If you like these teas, try these…

Earl Grey – Winter White Earl Grey, Victorian Earl Grey, Black Currant, Paris Blend

English Breakfast – Highlander Breakfast, Queen Catherine’s Blend

Lapsang Souchong – Russian Caravan, Eight at the Fort

Wedding Blend – White Vanilla Grapefruit, White Christmas

Jasmine – White Lilac, Rose Black Tea, Lover’s Leap Ceylon Tea

Bangkok Blend – Tokyo Blend, Coconut Oolong

Chai Tea – Hot Cinnamon Spice, Peaches & Ginger

Assam – Highlander Breakfast, Scottish Caramel

Sencha Kyoto Cherry Rose Festival – Crime of Passion, Wimbledon Blend

Coconut Oolong – Caramel & Almonds, French Vanilla

Enjoy!

Katherine
